One thing you must know is that going to bed immediately after consuming food is not at all healthy. Tiny tots are an exception in this regard because their meal intake is much lighter than that of grownups.

There are scores of reasons on why sleeping immediately after consuming food is dangerous. The short-term impacts are unpleasant but not so troubling. However, when the situation worsens over course of time, the long-term effects like obesity and heart troubles could be really threatening.

  • The most apparent difficulty people experience on eating and then sleeping soon afterward is with gastro-esophageal reflux. Under this state, an individual feels burning sensation around the throat and chest region. While some over the counter medications may provide temporary relief, the need for surgery may also arise in graver situations.
  • Another predicament which arises on not taking a proper gap between eating and sleep is snoring. Intake of a heavy meal before going to bed leads to building up of pressure around the diaphragm. Snoring is not only irritating but also a warning bell for numerous underlying health complications.
  • Weight gain becomes almost inevitable for one who sleeps immediately after consuming food. Thus, skipping meals or dieting throughout the day holds no value when sleep immediately follows a heavy diet.
  • Diabetes is another health concern which may arise due to this poor habit. Permitting insulin levels to increase prior to going to bed is not a wise initiative. Body’s reaction to large quantities of food is not at all favorable. The soaring intensity of insulin at bedtime leads to a disturbance in the glucose delivery coordination of the body.

Thus, it is advisable that you eat your last meal well in advance before snoozing. This would help improve your digestion as well. A walk before going to bed also does great wonders to one’s health, so give it a try if you can.
