Depression is generally referred to as a state where a person feels sad, dejected worthless and this affects his mental, physical as well as emotional well-being. Initially, Depression was thought of as a mild case of mood swing that has no meaning in the medical dictionary. However, with evolving time, definitions changed and doctors started giving special attention to this disorder. By passing time it acquired the status of a “disease” affecting about nineteen million people in America alone and million others worldwide.
Of the nineteen million Americans, about 20% women and 20% men are said to be clinically depressed. ‘Clinically depressed,’ it means that they require the attention of doctor for their recurring problem.
Counseling for depression has been a matter of debate for long. Treating depression requires years of expertise and the quality to understand the psychology of each patient. Depression is not like a wound that can be treated with a special antibiotic. It is there in one’s mind. It is a network of thoughts that one is carrying in his brain that may be a result of trauma or a bad situation that is forcing him to lead a life of an unconfident person with low self-esteem.
Each patient is unique and his problem must be addressed separately. The approach to the problem for every patient has to be unique.
Along with counseling, patients are advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle and indulge in any outdoor activity of his choice. Indulging in such activities often gives him a break from his vicious circle of negativity and will also give him a medium to release his energies in a positive way. Also, by doing this, he can get a chance to interact with someone who may serve as a positive influence to reduce depression.
Patients should approach only a doctor specializing in treating such disorders. Any wrong diagnosis can wreck the prospects of an individual to ever regain his lost self-esteem. It may also result in the continuation of mood swings in a person’s life and can ruin a person’s life forever. That is why such patients need a very systematic and careful guidance. Such patients should never be addressed as mentally ill and should always be encouraged to interact more.
People are generally shy of approaching psychologists. With the support of family and friends, this shyness can be overcome and they can also lead a happy and fulfilling life.
